In this fiction picture book, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, Marjorie Priceman takes you on a world-wide adventure in order to make an exquisite apple pie. In the story, a girl wants to make an apple pie. Easy, go down to the market with your recipe and pick up the items needed. But, what if the market is closed? You pack a suitcase and begin your traveling on board a boat to Europe with your shopping list and pick up the items necessary, of course! Stopping in Italy, France, Sri Lanka, England, Jamaica, and Vermont as they will provide the best ingredients.
What a terrific book to take your students around the world and remind them of how global trade benefits them in their visits to their local grocery store. After reading the story, I would have a discussion of where our food comes from. We may not receive our eggs from the chickens in France; however, they did travel from somewhere to arrive on the markets shelf.
I previously checked this book out at the public library and read it in during my summer book a day challenge in 2018. Last week, I purchased it while at my school’s book fair. I believe this will make a great conversation starter in World Geography on how we rely on so many different countries in our everyday lives! What picture books have you used in World Geography to teach or mentor an idea or concept? Please let me know in the comments below.
Over time, I will repost books I read last summer along with ideas on how to use them in the classroom. Stay tuned for more of these past #bookaday challenge posts as well as current posts on more books I have read. Until then – a latte of blessings & sparkles,

This looks so cute. I’ll have to see if my library has it.
